What to Expect
The art and science of chiropractic health care was first introduced to this country in September of 1895 by D.D. Palmer in Davenport, Iowa. Chiropractic is the largest and most widely accepted of the drug free health professions. This is not to denigrate the use of medications, sometimes they can be quite helpful, even lifesaving. It is just that as a profession, chiropractors have chosen a drugless path that utilizes the human body’s natural recuperative powers and seeks to remove any impediments to your natural good health. Chiropractic works to utilize your body's innate healing powers, a power that has guided your growth and development since you were first conceived.
On your first day you will be asked to fill out some paperwork. A history of your chief complaint will be reviewed with the doctor and a thorough chiropractic examination will be performed. If they are clinically indicated, x-rays may be taken. The doctor will then take some time to review your examination and x-ray findings and he will determine if you are a candidate for chiropractic care.
If you have a problem that chiropractic won't help, then we will find you someone who can. We have an extensive network of professionals in many specialties, so we can make an appropriate referral. Our practice is primarily focused on musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain, automobile injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome and TMJ pain. If you have these conditions, then we are ready and able to help you. Many patients find that seemingly unrelated issues can improve while they are under chiropractic care. After all, the nerve system in your spine controls every function in your body.
Prior to beginning any care, the doctor will sit down with you to review the examination and x-ray results. You will have an opportunity to ask any questions about your condition and any recommended treatments. If your spouse or significant other would like to attend, then they are welcome to join in. If the suggested care plan makes sense to you then, and only then, your treatment will begin.
As the profession has grown and diversified, several specialties have developed within chiropractic; pediatrics, sports medicine, acupuncture, personal injury, radiology, extremities and many more. Our practice specializes primarily in musculoskeletal conditions. There are over 144 specific techniques recognized by the American Chiropractic Association and although we don't know all of them, we are familiar with quite a few. We utilize primarily hands-on chiropractic adjustments, but we also have Activator instruments to assist in adjusting. Additionally, we utilize supportive physiotherapeutics to help you heal faster and get out of pain quicker. Some of the therapies we employ include electric muscle stimulation, mechanical traction and rehabilitative exercise. If you have had back surgery, we also have spinal decompression and Cox flexion/distraction tables that can allow you to safely receive chiropractic care.
